Understanding the different types of send

Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
It refer to the learning difficulties or disabilities that affect a child’s ability to learn. The term SEND is used to describe a wide range of conditions and disorders that affect children’s learning. These conditions can be physical, emotional, or cognitive in nature. Understanding the different types of SEND is crucial in identifying and addressing the needs of children with these conditions.
There are four broad categories of SEND:
1. Cognition and Learning: This category includes children who have difficulties with learning, such as dyslexia, dyscalculia, and developmental language disorders. Children with these conditions may struggle with reading, writing, and mathematics. They may also have difficulty understanding spoken language or expressing themselves verbally.
2. Communication and Interaction: This category includes children who have difficulties with communication and social interaction, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and speech and language disorders. Children with ASD may struggle to understand social cues or express their emotions appropriately. They may also have difficulty communicating verbally or non-verbally.
3. Sensory and Physical: This category includes children who have sensory impairments or physical disabilities that affect their ability to learn. Examples include visual impairment, hearing impairment, cerebral palsy, and epilepsy. Children with these conditions may require additional support to access the curriculum and participate in school activities.
4. Social, Emotional and Mental Health: This category includes children who have mental health problems or emotional difficulties that affect their ability to learn. Examples include anxiety disorders, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and conduct disorder. Children with these conditions may require additional support to manage their emotions and behavior in school.
It is important to note that many children with SEND may have multiple needs across these categories.
